Although there are many nicknames used to associate those who challenge society's traditional gender identities, which I like to call Gender Benders, there are basically just three major categories; Female and Male Impersonators, Transvestites, and Transexuals.
Most people are familiar with Drag Queens or Impersonators, who are usually homosexual and often crossdress to entertain or to attract members of the same sex. I've placed a few links in the left side bar to some Female Impersonators that I know personally, and some of the other sites I felt were worth noting.
Transvestites tend to cover a more complex and broader spectrum of varying characteristics, and surprisingly are found more often in the heterosexual camp. Perhaps you'd like to read an actual explanation of what a Transvestite is.
As a matter of fact, if you are a Gay Transvestite, you are the exception rather than the rule. You might also want to read the very interesting CIA Report on Transvestism! Either way, transvestism can vary from a fetish for a particular item of clothing or shoes to a desire to be dominated, humiliated and forced to crossdress. There are numerous adult male clubs and web sites for Adult Babies (AB's) who are into dressing up as little girls or playing the role of a sissy, mostly at home of course, and many who are even into the fantasy of age regression to the extent of diapering and role playing with their significant other. Most professionals agree that there is absolutely no harm in this practice, to the contrary, it can actually be an effective tool for releaving stress.
Few Transvestites have any interest in changing their sex; In actuality, many significant others find that by indulging their partners crossdressing fantasies, they improve and increase sexual activity at home. Much of society still shun Transvestites, which often leads to isolationism, alcoholism and even drugs, so a tolerant and understanding partner can remarkably increase the chance for a successful and fulfilling relationship. And, there are many Yahoo Groups and web sites designated for Transvestites, Crossdressers and Sissies.
Transexuals, on the other hand, are those with a psychological urge to belong to the opposite sex which may be carried to the point of undergoing surgery to modify the sex organs to mimic the opposite sex. And then again, some may not complete the process. I have discovered many who achieved a more complete feminine appearance, including breasts, but have discovered that it enhanced their overall sexual urge and performance, their visibility and interest to others and decided not to complete the transition. They claim that they were surprised to discover how many men, both gay and those claiming to be straight, express an interest in them since they had become a "chick with a d**k"....a well known phrase around the net.
Whatever your interest, with the help of the Internet it is now much easier to find others with which to share your fantasies and desires. The world has become much smaller and even more tolerant, so there's fewer and fewer excuses for not at least achieving some sort of happiness or gratification. JoAnn Roberts asks the question, Are you living in a box? Perhaps you are, and perhaps it's time to come out... at least to someone you can trust.
